Home office immigration raids grow hotter this summer!

Yesterday we interviewed a local business who experienced the unpleasant surprise knock on the door from the Home Office.

Their "trusted" worker had been working for the restaurant for 6 years, he was loyal and hardworking, first in, and last out. You could not fault him as a worker, and he regularly went above and beyond for the business and its customers.

It wasn't until the Home Office knocked on the door and wanted to see his right to work documentation, that a problem arose. It turned out that he had not been able to renew his visa and had overstayed his welcome in the UK.

He was afraid to lose his job, and he was afraid he would have to leave the UK, so he did what most people do, avoided the issue.

This oversight will result in the company being fined up to £20,000 for each illegal worker. This was not only damaging to their reputation, they lost a day's trade and were hit with a nasty fine which will have a negative effect not only financially but also shall create bad publicity.

This was an oversight by management which cost the company significantly. Having the right practices and systems in place is paramount, but for some small businesses is seen as an unnecessary expense until something unfortunate like this happens.
